I wanted to introduce you to the cause that I’m doing the fundraiser for. I love this organisation because they are the only (which I’ve come across) that is working in Somalia to cater for the education and betterment of orphaned and destitute children in the North of Somalia. Insha Allah, this will enable to to develop the cycle of poverty and dependence. May Allah reward the founders and staff at ICRA with Khair, they do such a wonderul job.

The Islamic Children’s Rescue Agency (ICRA) was founded in 2001 as a volunteer, non-profit making organization, dedicated to helping improve the quality of life among the orphaned and destitute children of Somaliland. Since the founding of the NGO, ICRA has grown to become a recognized and essential grass roots organization within the community. ICRA has proven again and again to be a reliable and trustworthy agency through transparency and provision of crucial support to the local community; targeting illiteracy, poverty and hunge r.
ICRA activities:
Education: Collection and distribution of educational materials to disadvantaged learning centers, founding and running of a public Islamic Library, assisting in raising HIV/AIDS and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) awareness among young women, establishment of the first Dyslexia association in the Horn of Africa, the Dyslexia Association of Somaliland (DAS), fighting adult illiteracy by providing affordable basic literacy classes to females heading households, establishment of a free non-formal primary education and skills training center (ICRA School) for orphaned and underprivileged girls, and providing free computer skills training for impoverished men and women.
Health: With the support of the Hargeisa Group Hospital, providing free medical care to ICRA school students and other emergency cases from the local community. Food Support: From the beginning of ICRA’s establishment the organization has been providing food rations to many orphaned children throughout the region. Collecting and distributing season ration charity (zakat al fitr), providing monthly ration support to children in need, and now with the support of WFP, providing monthly family size ration to students at the ICRA School.
Other Support: ICRA has also had the privilege of providing support to the Hargeisa Orphaned Center in the form of badly needed blankets and shoes for the 347 orphans at the center. Income generation: Income generation is a priority for ICRA, private computer skills courses, accounting and office management programs have been established as a means of income generation for the organization.
